    Tasmania Trip

Day Nine - Doesn’t time fly when your having fun. We’re now in St Kilda Melbourne, about 2000k from home, but there is already 2700k on the trip meter. We do lots of touring while away. Been away for 9 days and still can’t report that I’ve been able to capture some blinding photos. The weather, skies and light have been against me 🙁 But, it has to change soon...I hope. Our apartment for 2 nights at St Kilda is a good one with a view of the city too, but had problems getting the key and access to the underground car park. I would give you all a laugh with the saga, but it would take too much typing. Here is view from our main room when we arrived. It was cloudy over the city when we got here, but by sunset, we had clear blue skies again. Oh how I used to wish for more of those when I lived in the UK, now I have them by the bucket load and wish for some cloud and rain. What a funny old world. No plans for tomorrow, we’ll see how we feel when we get up. We are right on the edge of the city, so it’s pretty busy on the roads, but traffic thins out when you get out past the commuter belt.

  6. Tell her who must be obeyed that I don`t do this for everyone ☺️ Anymore to her majesties liking?
  7. BTW forgot to mention, that guy who is rolling around laughing was on Cromer pier, he used to work for Canon so I asked him if he Knew Barry Beckham and has he seen your work, with that he burst into laughter and has never been the same since😂😂 Take Care Mate (I`m still in touch with BJ at times BTW) Dave
  8. Well tell her who must be obeyed to take those designer sun glasses off😂 and it`s very true that I don`t know my way around PS like yourself but of course that`s because I rarely need to delve because I usually produce a finished image in the shooting stage 😀 The revolution came with the Canon 1DSmk1 that had 11 million pixels IMHO but boy did that sensor attract the dust spots or what. Anyway, watch out for those Crocs (is that why I don`t see any low angle shots from you nowdays)😏 Dave
  9. Thanks Joan, it was actually quite dark so much so that I couldn`t find my way back indoors after 😀 I`ll have another look at it but sometimes you loose the feeling of the moment if you make things look too natural. I have cataracts so it might be me keeping the brightness down for comfort whilst processing ( not that I have to do much in the way of processing 😂) Take Care Dave

Day Eight - Went out late in the afternoon for a drive and tried to time it so we were in going the right direction at sunset. However, we’ve had another day of clear blue skies with not a cloud in site all day. That does not make for great evening light. Found a spot to get the drone up and checked the flight app. Once again I got NO FLY ZONE warning due to being within 5.5k of a heliport. One we got further out I managed to take a flight over the edge of Lake Hume. Its badly in need of water, but the shots looked ok on the screen. Mostly stills as I couldnt see any great advantage of video. ‘Took a second flight and tried my first automatic Mavic shot pano, but I won’t see the result of that till we get home. Shot in raw so I hope I can stitch the shots together using Adobe Camera Raw. Had to bring the drone down after the pano when a Sea Eagle flew overhead. I’ve heard of drones being taken down by birds and I was in its territory, so I brought it back sharpish. Tomorrow we have a trip of around 300k to St Kilda in Melbourne. That puts us a few minutes from the boat terminal to Tasmania.
  11. Lovely selection of infra-red images Dave C, quite evocative, though I agree with Carol that the sky shots are a bit dark.

  14. She who must be obeyed thinks your images are too dark, so pick the bones out of that. The little Nikon’s were the first Coolpix cameras. First was the Coolpix 900 with 1MP, then they went to the Coolpix 950 with 2MP and after a while the 990 with 3MP. That was when I moved on and paid £2000 for the first Canon SLR. The D30 and that also had just 3MP. I recall the first time I used the D30, I thought I had spend £2000 on a door stop. Took me a while with that soft CMOS sensor to get the best from that camera. Things started looking up with the D60 with 6MP. P.S. after introducing me to Photoshop, it’s a shame you never learned how to use it too 😂😂😂

    Confused

I make the point here in Australia that back in our day at Dagenham CC in the UK, no one would have dreamed of suggesting that we change the scoring from 1-10 in favour of something that spares delicate members feelings. No one would have suggested that we create three different grades of photography, Basic, Intermediate and Advanced so that those who have just picked up a camera can win something. I’ve met many people here who are not embarrassed to say they don’t want to move out of a lower grade. They prefer to be top of a lower grade rather than progress to the next. What does that say about human nature? Some clubs have even moved away from calling the grades, Basic, Intermediate and Advanced. They give them letters like A, AA and AAA. Forgive my bluntness, but it’s pathetic. There is no such thing as advanced photography, it’s just photography. The individual can advance themselves, but those who do usually don’t need a dumbing down of the standard to encourage them. Entry, Acceptance, Merit and Honour. Does anyone know what they mean entirely? Is sanity likely to return? Not in my lifetime 😁

    Confused

Your confused? join the club (no pun intended) wait till you are my age, you don`t know what confused is yet 😢 I go into a room and can`t remember why I came in and what I came in for and then i can`t remember where I came from😁 Photography seems to be more about equipment that shooting images and capturing the moment. In some of the forums they go on about "should I use a filter or carry spare batteries etc etc" Don`t get me wrong, as you know I love the equipment side of the hobby but buying stuff just to have it seems to be the new trend I`m afraid and some people haven`t got a clue how to use all the features and spend their time trying to find their way around the camera as the photo opportunities pass them buy. When we were judging it was just so exciting seeing lots of really great images but times have changed for sure Becks. do you remember at the club one night, I was judging and someone presented a print mounted on the back of a Kelloggs conflake packet? As I remember it was a decent image but I refused to mark it. Dave
  17. Not so much of the Pillock please 😁 (I remember when I had to introduce you to PS) Do I remember telling you that IR doesn`t work around the sea ??? you sure you didn`t dream that? I was shooting IR when you still had a Nikon 900 😘 (remember those superb little cameras Beck?) Just for that you can have a couple of images I shot late afternoon here today. Hope you are keeping well mate (and don`t forget that mat spray on your bonce otherwise it affects every ones exposure in the area 😋 Give my regards to her who must be obeyed AT ALL TIMES Dave
  18. Those of us who have taken the step into Infra Red and you took that step long before me, soon appreciate just how good it is in full bright sun conditions. Conditions when it’s hard, if not an impossible task to get a good shot with a conventional camera. You don’t get much stronger sun than summer Australia and it handles the light and contrast easy. I’ve spread that word in my talks and videos, but amateur photographers are hit with so much advice about what they must have, that any talk of Infra Red gets lost in the static. I’ve said it lots of times that it really does open up lots of opportunities, but it also needs some knowledgeable work in an image editor to get the best from it. The old guy laughing is a good image, but you need to remove the pillock in the reflection with the funny hat. Not sure who he is 🤣 The dog walker further down the lane is a great shot. Do you recall saying to me Infra red doesn’t work well around the sea? https://flic.kr/p/QT82bv

    Tasmania Trip

Day Seven - Made great progress on a long stretch of our trip. Just short of 500k in under 6 hours and that included a lunch stop. We were just fortunate that we had a 110 kph motorway nearly all the way to Albury. We are now right on the state line between New South Wales and Victoria, but well inland away from the coast. The ocean looks to be about 300k from her at the closest point. Had a short ride out this evening and in fact crossed into Victoria briefly, but couldn’t find anything much to photograph. It’s been clear blue skies all day, which is a little monotonous for photography unless you can use that low glancing light just before sunset. This is great country for landscapes, but as you all know, we need that special light to lift them from ordinary to something better. At the moment the weather is perfect if you want a tan 😁 Hopefully tomorrow may be different, but if not, we’ll still take a ride out and enjoy the day.

The same issues we talked about with the drone. I should be fine with what I shot as it as mostly low light, but I must remember to put my video hat on next time and do that.

Day Six - Not many photo opportunities today. Just a little video shot with the Canon 5D Mk 4 in the late afternoon. I was surprised that the cable release does not start the video when in video mode and you don’t seem to have control of iso in video mode. I was just shooting 20 second clips for use in projects later in the year, but it all worked nicely anyway. Tomorrow, we have a long leg to Albury, which is about 450k. No cities to get through and it should be a good drive through the Australian Countryside. There is no internet in the cabin, so we are having to use the iPhone as a hot spot, but the signal for the phone is very weak too. It seems to be a little better in the evening, but it should be much better at Albury tomorrow.

Frustrating, but more due to the fact that my fellow man and women seem to want protecting against any slight disappointment . So much so that we are all happy to accept absolute BS. Like how a man can magically turn into a women. Logic suggests that with a score of 1-10. 5 must be average. I would consider 6 as competent, but without saying much

  28. It` been up to 15c here for over a week now so walks up at the beach and countryside have been in order. I am considering having another camera converted to IR because my present fuji XM1 doesn`t have a viewfinder so I am using a Hoodman to hold against the screen to cut the light out. I`ve also been using my 50mm f2 fuji lens( 75mm equi 35mm) as well as my 14mm 2.8 (equi 21mm in35mm). the 50mm is a superb lens for IR and gives a bit more reach when needed. Not been much snow around this year but at least the heating costs are kept low. 😁 now that we have high speed fibre lets see if we can upload a few images.

Thanks, Barry. That scoring system is interesting. At our club we mark out of 10 - although judges rarely give less than a six. (To be fair, we rarely get "bad" images entered.) I'd take 6-10 as being Below Average, Average, Good, Very Good and Excellent. If I had to translate that into the system you described I think I'd be reserving "Entry" for any that get less than 6, "Acceptance" as being 6 or 7, "Merit" as being 8 or 9 and "Honour being 10. Having 80% of images get the same rating is clearly pointless! The club asking you to judge on that basis should have explained their requirements beforehand - it must have been frustrating to have it explained that "Entry" is never used after you'd done the work.
