    Website down

It appears that the domain registrar, got something wrong and severed the whole domain name from the website and the emails. Its nice to work with professionals isn't it. There was never any reason to touch my domain anyway.

Am I just unlucky or is the internet out to get me. This morning Tuesday 15th my entire domain was not operational. No web site, no emails. It’s 12 hours later and still no change. The powers that be are aware of it. They have confirmed that, but I suppose my site being based in the UK means when I’m awake the technical brains in the UK are asleep 😂

    Royalty Free Music

I picked this posting up from the wnsoft forum and would recommend those who want to use copyright free music to listen to some of the music available on this site by Eric Matyas. Please do make sure you give the credits asked for if you use his music and also consider a donation too. I have copied the contents of his posting below Hello all I've created over 500 tracks of music and soundscapes that you can use freely in your slideshows, presentations or anything else you can think of. It's all original...all my own work. All I ask is to be credited as indicated on my homepage:http://soundimage.org/I sincerely hope my tracks are helpful. Any and all feedback is welcome and always appreciated. All the best,Eric

    sync for hard drives.

Only yesterday I bought 2 new 3 Gig Sata drives for Raw image backup use via an EZSTOR. The internal Sata drives slot into the EZSTOR cassette and act like a very large USB stick. I label them A and B and that will take all my images for quite a while.

    sync for hard drives.

Personally I like to do this myself and would need to build up a lot of trust before I relaxed enough to allow a computer to take over. I am guessing here, but I can see how some people may have some difficulty with this subject, if they lose track of what has been backed up and what has not. There used to be systems that backed up certain folders and added what was different, I am sure there still are, but I've chosen not to use them. I store all finished images in folders under the dates of year and month. When I back them up. It's easy to see where I'm up to. I open the from drive located on the PC and the external to drive located off the PC and compare the folders. Then backup to drive A and then drive B.

    MS Office 365

I think the key to learning new software is patience. We get used to where everything is with out old software and we want to get back to that position with new software over a weekend. It ain’t going to happen. I am more relaxed these days and I allow the knowledge to build up gradually. Cramming just doesn’t work for me and as long as I get the new software running, I allow time to fill in the blanks. The thing is, we know an option is bound to be in there somewhere, it’s just finding it 😀 I too wanted to migrate to Outlook and I must say it’s darn good for setting up emails. I was surprised to find that the email address and password is all I needed. Windows live isn’t like that at all. However it’s all up and running on all our PC’s and working ok. It would be great if you could set everything up on one computer and then sync it to others over wi-fi

    MS Office 365

I took the plunge and bought Office 365 today. My old word program is being left behind by technology I think and it was a cheap and cheerful product when I bought it years ago. I also wanted to move up to the Outlook email client, ready for an upgrade to W10. We are now experiencing a few minor irritations with Windows 7. The cynic in me suggests that this is a cunning plan to force the remaining W7 users to upgrade. If that is the plan, then it’s working. I can install Office 365 on 5 computers, which is more than enough for us and it’s around $125 per year. Given the use we both get out of it, it seems a reasonable deal to me. I do love the way these programs from the cloud install. Click the download and walk away. Like Photoshop it does the rest and no slower than installing from a disk.

    MS Office 365

I’ve been meaning to get around to this for about a year. While I have a bit of time on my hands waiting for my web guru in the UK to sort out the menus on my new site, I took the plunge. The part I wasn’t looking forward to was migrating emails and contacts from Live mail. it wasn’t straight forward, but we managed it

    Drone Mania

One disappointment with the Mavic Pro 2 is that you cannot rotate the camera to portrait mode as you can with the original Mavic Pro. This is what I wanted to do for panoramas shot in raw, because with the panos from my sons Mavic Pro, Photoshop could not stitch them for some reason. I got better results with portrait mode and manual shots. (the Mavics all have auto pano modes) Its not insurmountable, but it means the images are shot in two rows rather than one. Unless of course I can find a way to stitch raw auto pano images myself. The Mavic will take a lot of images and automatically stitch them, but as jpegs. I don’t want to give up that Raw latitude

So what are the thoughts of Brits regarding this drone issue at Gatwick. Especially as we plan to visit a store in Brisbane that has them in stock tomorrow. I’m sure there is always going to some lunatic that will bend the rules, or break them entirely, but it would be particularly risky to be flying a drone over an airport. What point would there be. You can’t show the footage you’ve shot, if that was the reason for flying there as it will quickly result in police officers at your door. However, this will do enormous damage to genuine law abiding users of drones. Did a 150 people really see a drone over the airport, or did they see something that looked like a drone. I can easily find 150 people who believe they saw a space ship land, but would they shut down an international airport for that reason. if you can fire frozen chickens into jet engines to test their durability, what would a bit of plastic do. I hate the knee jerk reactions of those who want to ban them. They won’t get their way, but it will make it much harder for those who are law abiding and honest to just go about a bit of landscape photography
  12. Someone in the computer industry expressed a view about PTE this week that was passed onto me by another PTE user. The view was: Why would anyone in their right mind download a zipped exe file to their computer with all the security risks and fears associated with doing that? He even expressed concern why a product would be called PicturesToEXE. Most of us here are pretty comfortable doing that, because we have built up faith and confidence in PTE and as far as we know, a virus has never been an issue with any PTE files. However, ransomware travels as a zipped file and you open it at your peril. I know, because we did get caught once in a moment when our guard was down Could this be why only 14% of people who view a slide show in PTE's Slide Show Club download a file. Does the person expressing that view have a point, particularly with the name PicturesToEXE. Does it need a name change and is that a practical thing to even suggest

Joan. We haven’t been there before. We have travelled the East Coast down to Melbourne before, but things are always different, but Tassie will be new territory. New places are always good for inspiration.

    Presentation

I need some help with topics for videos on the subject of Presentation. We have the obvious ones like edge lines, drop shadow frames, block mounting and multiple image presentation. I could add Montage, and strategic colour, but I wonder if there are topics I’m missing. Any ideas or suggestions gratefully received

    Presentation

Yes, that may work. I vignette loads of my images, but most people would not see it unless they saw a before and after. With blurring, I suppose you mean strategic blur to influence where we look in a picture. A bit like strategic colour which is another technique that could slot in under the heading of presentation

Hello Lithman How you doing? I did the fine line idea first. Just trying to get a view from other minds on what they think of as presentation.

    Test topic-Resolved hopefully

Today I lost my cool with the tech guys on a chat line. I hate putting all these internet tech guys in one basket and giving them a negative label, because there must be some exceptions, but they are clever, but stupid at the same time. How can they take a working web site, make a change, then email the customer and crow that they have done the job, only for the customer to discover the site is down. I’m no techie, but wouldn’t we expect the basics to be something like this. Check that the customers site is working. Make the technical change. Then check the site is still working. Basic common sense isn’t it? Not in the internet world it seems. This has happened to me over and over again. I made a tentative enquiry about what would it involve and cost to make my forum SSL compliment. It was the experts who said. We can do that for you, leave it to us. If only !!! They make the change, they don’t check the site and cause the customer stress and problems over a number of days. Today, I got a message to say the reason my site would not appear was because the problem was with my other supplier? What bloody other supplier, they are the only supplier. When i pointed this out, a guy said that he thought his colleague was confused. Not half as confused as me. I have come to this view in life. You can be technically gifted , you can have common sense, but you can’t have both. If such a person exists, I’ve not met them yet. looking back at my fault logs his problem has plagued me since the 14th December. We are a simple forum. But suppose it was my business and livelihood. To have your site down or unusable in the run up to Christmas. Pathetic. I wouldn’t employ some of these people to mow my lawn. Ok RANT over 😀

Our Tasmania trip is taking shape. My personal tour organiser (you know who) has started making bookings so we are off around the middle of February. It's a 1100k trip to Sydney, another 1000k to Melbourne, then a 9 hour boat trip with the car to Tasmania. We are allowing a 10 day trip down, stopping two nights in each place. We think we will be on Tassie for 3 weeks, then on the trip back we can make that as fast or as slow as we want. We're not into marathon car journeys anymore, that's why we are allowing 10 days to get to Melbourne and the port.

    The Problem with Audio Visual

Joan Thanks for the comment and happy new year to you too. That show was made some time ago now and the size of it is small compared to those we make now. I also never kept the original montages, so I can't increase the size. I thought a frame might make it look a bit more impressive, but I agree with Morturn. I had my own doubts before he said anything and his comment just confirmed what I was thinking myself. I don't make a habit of remaking old slide shows, but while building a new web site and waiting for my web guru in the UK to get his finger out, I was/am at a loose end.
  24. The biggest negative issue with audio visual are the audio visual creators themselves and I'm not pointing the finger here. I'm placing myself right in the middle where the fault lies. We get an idea, that idea starts the creative juices flowing and then we then lose all our common sense as a creative fog descends over our senses and shuts out the voices of our better angels. The angels that are shouting: This sequence is twice the length it should be. Those images are just not good enough. That music is just not setting the scene. But, we don't hear those angels because we are on a mission and now the only goal is to complete our mission. We are unaware that a creative fog has descended over our senses and if we were an aircraft, we would be way off course. We would be flying towards the mountains and not even know it. We all know about the possibility of this, but we fall prey to it anyway and a few sequences I have seen lately could be used as examples, but I can use one of my own. A few years ago I made a sequence from an idea I had where the images would be montages. The montages would build up in individual slides and my idea was the show would be constantly moving. Rebuilding my website in the past weeks and preparing slide shows to be posted I came across the sequence called "Another Age" I played it and after a short time I wondered what possessed me to do what I had done and I hit the escape key. It's not a good sign if you can't bear to watch your own slideshow. I had used 66 images and the sequence was 7 minutes long. The whole thing was slow and boring, the fades were far too long and drawn out and the music while OK wasn't adding much, but at the time I was delighted with it. It has taken a few years for my creative fog to lift, but now I could clearly see that the whole thing was a disaster. Not the idea so much, but the creation of it. I set about doing something about it and found some period music on YouTube that I felt added something to the atmosphere of the images. I threw out around 15 images, adjusted the opening title and re-synchronized the images to a bit of music just 2:40 in length. What a difference, it's now a little over a third of the original show length. If I can recognise my own shortcomings with regard to creating audio visual I could certainly use some honest feedback, but that's something I rarely get. So, who wants to have a go and really say what they think. Have I redeemed this or is it time to shrug and move on. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kHZv1qPHyKg&t=37s Edited with a new link 4th Jan 2019

    Windows 10

Has anyone here just bought a disk copy of W10 and installed it over a running version of W7. Rather than a fresh install, more an upgrade and if so, how did it go?
